Hawaii From Space Program

Dear Hawaii Middle and High School Educator Community

At present, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration – OceanWatch Program is currently seeking applications for its “Hawaii from Space” outreach program, which will provide up to three middle and/or high schools in the State of Hawaii with complete satellite receiving stations for capturing and analyzing satellite imagery directly in the classroom in real-time.

The selected schools will be supplied with all necessary equipment and materials completely free of charge. This hands-on experience in satellite remote sensing, math and science will provide students and teachers alike with a valuable opportunity for observing, monitoring and analyzing a wide range of natural features and processes. Just some examples of these include the convergence of oceanic fronts, identification of lava flows from Pu’u’ O’o’, and the identification and monitoring of cloud types and storm fronts.

The schools selected for this program will be awarded all the necessary equipment for operating the satellite receiving station, including:

In addition, OceanWatch - Central Pacific Node will also provide:

With these tools, your school will be able to incorporate real-time satellite imagery directly in the classroom environment and thus, take advantage of the currently available space technology. This pedagogical tool will serve to encourage student participation, and also enable the students to learn about math and science while also having fun!

Indeed, we celebrate your excitement of introducing space technology directly in the classroom environment!

Please submit the completed application form to the address indicated below. The application must be received no later than May 15, 2005.

The application for the Hawaii from Space 2005 program is now closed. Please check back soon for next year's application!
