Satellite remote sensing can provide synoptic views of numerous surface processes and features. The examples below show the emplacement of recent (hot) lava flows (red) from Pu'u' O'o', and active vent from Kilauea Volcano as detected by means of infrared Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) satellite imagery.

The AVHRR image below shows the snowcap summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa volcanoes, the highest landmasses in the State of Hawaii. The cities of Hilo and Kailua-Kona are included for reference.
